Finding chapter books for second graders can be tough, because these kids are often new to reading and we don't want to discourage them with bulky chapter books. Ideally, these kids would be seven-year-olds. The selections for this age (unless you have a faster reader) tend to be heavily illustrated, featuring text in much larger fonts and simple storylines, most of which are under 100 pages. If you're an adult reader, you could get through these books in under an hour or much less. Series are also a hit for this age group.

Audiobooks can be absolutely delightful for younger readers. They're a great way for kids who may not yet be strong readers to experience chapter books and longer texts they otherwise wouldn't be able to access. Audiobooks also help keep kids company and work well as a read-along guide for illustrated books, so kids can listen to the audio while they follow along in their own books. Whatever your use case, I have some fun audiobooks for 2nd graders today. This list includes funny books, spunky protagonists, and many, many series to keep your kids listening for a long time.

Book series for 2nd graders are important because kids at this age are new to chapter books and there's no better way to keep them hooked than to hand them multi-book series. Every 2nd grader is different. Some are precocious and can read young middle grade books, while others may only be getting a grasp of reading independently. Whether your child is on either extreme or smack in the middle, there's a book for them on this list. I've also rounded up picks from many genres including fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, adventure, and animal fiction, so you can have a wide range to choose from. All the books on this list are well under 150 pages long.
