For these age-based recommendations, I tend to choose books with characters around that age and stories in which the plot includes age-appropriate elements. I also usually choose shorter books for younger kids.

40+ Best Books for 5th Graders https://readingmiddlegrade.com/best-books-for-fifth-graders/ https://readingmiddlegrade.com/best-books-for-fifth-graders/#comments Thu, 18 Jan 2024 21:02:01 +0000 https://readingmiddlegrade.com/?p=10030 I like finding books for 5th graders because, at this point, kids are starting to read middle grade books. For these kids who are around age 10 or so, it's good to find engaging, relatable stories. Many of them may also enjoy funny books or even sprawling fantasies. Depending on their reading levels, they may find illustrated or graphic novels more enjoyable than more text-based stories. I recommend encouraging all kinds of reading as long as it's age-appropriate.

20 Popular Book Series 5th Graders Love https://readingmiddlegrade.com/book-series-for-5th-graders/ https://readingmiddlegrade.com/book-series-for-5th-graders/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2023 14:12:09 +0000 https://readingmiddlegrade.com/?p=66188 There are two kinds of problems parents and teachers often have with kids being readers: they're either not reading enough or at all OR they're burning through books too fast to find options. Book series help with both of these issues. With reluctant readers, book series keep them in a familiar universe, making it easier to get into each next story, while with voracious readers, finding a series with at least five installments is a surefire way to keep them booked and busy for some time. Regardless of what camp you fall into, I'm sharing 20 excellent book series for 5th graders to enjoy. My list includes graphic novels, sports books, adventure stories, mystery, sci-fi, and feel-good stories.

The Best 5th Grade Nonfiction Books https://readingmiddlegrade.com/nonfiction-books-for-5th-graders/ https://readingmiddlegrade.com/nonfiction-books-for-5th-graders/#respond Thu, 19 Oct 2023 07:21:15 +0000 https://readingmiddlegrade.com/?p=60201 Recommending nonfiction books for 5th graders may not be a natural response for many teachers and parents who love to read fiction. But as an elementary school teacher and librarian, I’ve noticed that students who say, “Oh, I’m not a reader,” or, “I don’t really like reading,” might resist the siren songs of the latest fantasy series but, more often than not, will willingly dip in and out of the latest Guinness Book of World Records or Who Was… book.

Fifth graders on the cusp of middle school are often fascinated by not just learning about the world around them but questioning what they see and hear while forming their own identities. Nonfiction books provide intriguing windows to the complex layers of our physical and emotional world.
