The Terrible Two is a riotous, animated middle grade book about pranks, unlikely friendships, and cows. This is a great bridge book for kids who like graphic novels and chapter books with wacky humor. It’s super short, and the audiobook is fantastic for the entire family.

I loved the first Tola book and have been meaning to read the next two books in the series, so I was happy to get this one (and book three) on audio since my audio TBR moves faster than print! Atinuke’s writing is absolutely darling.

Maggie’s summer is off to a rocky start when her parents announce that she has a half-sister—a daughter her father never knew about until now. Callie’s presence throws off soft-spoken Maggie’s dynamic with her outspoken best friend Daija, even more when Callie joins their hair-braiding business. I loved this sweet, relatable middle grade book about sisterhood, entrepreneurship, and finding your voice. This book shines in its realistic portrayal of familial complexities and the ups and downs of friendship, and the audiobook has three narrators — one for each girl.

Ava’s mom is on bed rest about to have twins, so Ava’s been sent to her grandparents’ lake house. There, she witnesses the death of a bird, and after her Nonna unknowingly mentions that dead birds can signify a curse, Ava is convinced that something bad will happen to her mom unless she does a good deed of caring for two newly hatched chicks. Where The Water Takes Us is a gentle, sensitive book, perfect for anxious kids desperate to control life’s many uncertainties. I enjoyed this one on audio!

I have a print copy of this one but have yet to get to it and I’m thrilled to get to experience it on audio for under $1! If you haven’t read it yet and have been meaning to, run, don’t walk!

There’s one thing to note about this summer’s theater show: it will be NOT starring Zadie Louise. Because of tight financial circumstances, Zadie’s summer activities have all been replaced with helping out (or at least trying not to cause a disaster) in the theater where her mom directs plays. Unlike her older sister, Zadie is not interested in acting and would rather hang out with the lights and tech crew, but it seems that she ruins everything she touches! This is a funny, relatable summer read that tackled the real issue of familial financial insecurity.

I loved the first book in the Merci Suarez series (and it did win a Newbery!) so I’m eager to finish off the series with this last book.

I’ve been meaning to read this one but the slavery theme and the unappealing cover put me off for some time. I always enjoy Alexander’s books on audio so I’m open to trying this one out for less than $1.

You won’t believe how long I’ve had this one in paperback but like I said, my print TBR is a beast. Here’s hoping the audiobook does the trick!
