Fifth graders are some of the most enthusiastic young readers I know. They're eager to explore new genres and starting to figure out their reading tastes. If your 5th graders love mystery, these mystery books for 5th graders are worth checking out. I've included a variety of choices with varying reading difficulty levels and mystery types. You'll find cozy mysteries, mysteries with a strong emotional component, a couple of murder mysteries, and several gentle options for sensitive readers.

Pulse-Pounding Mysteries and Thrillers for 8th Graders

8th graders are notoriously hard to recommend books to because they're often fully into YA but very much still in middle school. Most middle grade caters to ages 8-12, which doesn't include most 8th graders. At the same time, educators and parents may be wary about handing just any YA books to their 8th grade crowd. If you're in the more cautious boat, these recommendations will work perfectly for you. I've also included some more risqué choices (in terms of language content, only), so you'll find a heads up in my description of books if they have any noteworthy instances of profanity. In terms of sexual content, these are all very 8th grade appropriate--limited to kissing.

But, I have to admit, many great middle-grade mystery books are also just about the mystery (at least it's the central plot) -- and that's fine too.
