I always yearn to see more diverse stories about Black girls -- stories that aren't about slavery or even being Black necessarily. Many of the books on this list of middle grade books about Black girls tick these boxes. In line with my preferences, you'll find only realistic fiction on this list (although there are so many great fantasy titles -- like the Amari series -- centering Black girls). I've included both contemporary and historical fiction and mostly recent titles with a few classics. I also wanted to share stories of different kinds of Black girls -- sporty, science-loving, artsy, neurodivergent, struggling with mental health, big sisters, little sister, orphans, etc. Honestly, if I wanted to list all my favorites, this list would go on and on, so take this as a sampling!

You'll find fierce girls who play sports, are thrilled by science and space, solve mysteries, enjoy music, love hard, are loyal friends, courageous dream chasers, and wonderful daughters.
